First Nest
The back story of this partnership I have with this pair of American Robins
I noticed a robin nest in a tree in my front yard. The single chick in the nest looked like it would be fledging any day.
It did in fact fledge a couple of days later.
At the time I also had a pair of Carolina Chickadees nesting in a box in my front yard, not very far from my front door. I decided to get some mealworms to feed to the chickadees. These turned out to be too large and the chickadees were not interested. That’s when a female robin came up my walkway, very interested in the mealworms I had to offer. This was around the 4th of June 2026. I noticed she was not eating the mealworms but was instead taking them to the fledgling who was now perched in a tree just across the street. The father also came to collect as much as he could in his beak to take to the fledgling.
Life was good for this pair. I went through 1,000 mealworms in about a week and a half. It got to a point any time I came to my door, Momma bird would run over to me. Even when she was across the street she would run to my walkway rather than fly. At one point the fledgling came to the tree in the front yard while I was feeding the parents and they both flew up to feed it.
I suppose the mother thought things were going so well she could start on another nest. This time she picked a hanging flower basket right off my walkway. I have a good view of the nest from a 2nd floor window.
Dad was still feeding the fledgling when she laid the first egg.
